Happy Thursday everyone. \u00a0I am so happy to be working on furniture again. \u00a0Lots of furniture! \u00a0I have recently had a few consults for custom work \u00a0and I feel like I am back in business again. \u00a0For so long I wouldn’t take on custom work because I a) had a belly in the way b) was afraid I would go into labor and not be able to finish or c) had a tiny human to take care of and couldn’t give a reasonable time frame to a customer. \u00a0It’s not like I feel like I have it altogether by a long stretch but I am starting to feel like a real person again after being the “preggo chick” or the “zombie who just had a baby” for so long.<\/p>\n

So on to the furniture! \u00a0This week I have a sweet sewing machine table that long ago lost it’s sewing machine. \u00a0When I found it, it was really sad and covered in white paint. \u00a0There were weird circles all over the top and the (bad) paint job had not gotten better with age and wear. \u00a0This picture really doesn’t capture it.<\/p>\n

The top part would have originally flipped over so you could access the sewing machine inside. \u00a0It’s similar to the one my mom had while I was growing up (that she still has) that was my great grandmother’s. \u00a0Since there was no machine, the lid had been secured down. \u00a0This makes it much more secure since there will be no wiggling of the top part as you write.<\/p>\n

I found this after TB had brought home my birthday present last summer of the wonderful antiques sewing machine and I had done a lot of research on how to restore them. \u00a0Incidentally, I did a lot of research but haven’t even started on my own but I thought I would give this one a shot. \u00a0I tried to strip and sand the paint off to see if I could get it back to the wood and restain but it was a no go. \u00a0There was too much paint into the grain (and not in a lovely cerused way<\/a>). \u00a0So paint it was.<\/p>\n

I have had this sitting for awhile waiting for inspiration to strike. \u00a0Then I realized that with its clear lines it would look lovely in black. \u00a0I used CeCe Caldwell’s Beckeley Coal and did a wax finish. \u00a0The wax finish is really starting to grow on me with that warm look. \u00a0 \u00a0For a little fun I painted the underneath in a gray from SafeCoat. \u00a0I left the hole for the old cord partly as a nod to nostalgia and partly for use with a laptop cord.<\/p>\n

And wouldn’t you know that Vintage Folding Chair<\/a> goes perfectly with this? \u00a0I have been searching for a small chair that would fit when pushed underneath and it was sitting next to it all along! They are listed separately but I hope they go home with someone together! \u00a0They would be great for someone in a small space. \u00a0The chair could be folded up and the desk could be used as a bar or for serving space. \u00a0Or as a vanity! \u00a0Head to the shop to check it out<\/a>.<\/p>\n
