Year&#8217;s Garlic Harvest"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One of our favorite things to grow in our garden is garlic. \u00a0Last year was our first year and I don&#8217;t ever see us not planting it.<\/p>\n<p>There are two basic types of garlic: \u00a0softneck and hardneck. \u00a0Softneck garlic is what you find in the grocery store because it stores a bit better and can also be braided by it&#8217;s greens. \u00a0Hardneck garlic grows a flower stalk called a scape. \u00a0It is the long scrolly yellow thing in my hand here.<\/p>\n<p><a onclick=\"javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('\/downloads\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Ridiculous-Redhead-garlic-scape-4832.jpg');\"  href=\"http:\/\/ridiculousredhead.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Ridiculous-Redhead-garlic-scape-4832.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-1954\" off to focus the plant&#8217;s energy on growing the bulb. \u00a0We cut them off to eat them because they are delicious! \u00a0If you see them at farm markets (I saw them last week), buy them then go to<a onclick=\"javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('\/outgoing\/www.agardenforthehouse.com\/2012\/06\/garlic-scape-pesto\/');\"  href=\"http:\/\/www.agardenforthehouse.com\/2012\/06\/garlic-scape-pesto\/\"> this recipe at A Garden for the House<\/a> and make the Garlic Scape Pesto. \u00a0It is so delicious that you won&#8217;t believe it. \u00a0They are only available in June and early July so don&#8217;t miss them.<\/p>\n<p>A few weeks after the scapes have been cut and once the leaves have died back a bit, it&#8217;s time to pull the garlic out. \u00a0My garlic was starting to turn brown but I probably would have waited a bit to pull except for the storm that is on the way. \u00a0There is supposed to be a big storm tonight and the idea is that you want the garlic to be dry when you pull it so it will cure better. \u00a0I figured a little early was better than losing some to rot so out they came.<\/p>\n<p><a belly\u00a0after having Lincoln last fall that I may have planted a lot of garlic. \u00a0May have.\u00a0You plant one clove and it grows into one head. \u00a0Even with a few that didn&#8217;t work out we still had a ton. \u00a045 garlic heads in all. \u00a0 This is a very large basket.<\/p>\n<p><a and broke it open to make sure there were cloves formed inside. \u00a0We used that in our dinner last night. \u00a0Garlic needs to cure by drying for a couple weeks to enable you to store it for long periods of time. \u00a0So the rest of the plants came inside to get their roots trimmed and the dirt brushed off.<\/p>\n<p><a articles on how to cure garlic. \u00a0You know what they all say? \u00a0&#8220;Hang in a cool dry place with good airflow.&#8221; \u00a0Many suggest your shed. \u00a0It is July. \u00a0 Our shed is about 187 degrees with no airflow. \u00a0Our sunroom is breezy but hot. \u00a0Our basement is cool and damp. \u00a0Last year we ended up losing a lot of shallots to rot because I didn&#8217;t know where to put them. \u00a0This year I just brought them in and hung them in the kitchen.<\/p>\n<p><a onclick=\"javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('\/downloads\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Ridiculous-Redhead-garlic-curing-5293.jpg');\" shallots) in bunches of 10 with cotton string and hung them off the shelf thing where we keep Opie&#8217;s food and all of our towels. \u00a0I took out the top basket so you can see the
