{"id":302,"date":"2011-12-06T13:21:14","date_gmt":"2011-12-06T18:21:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ridiculousredhead.com\/?p=302"},"modified":"2014-09-03T22:30:28","modified_gmt":"2014-09-04T02:30:28","slug":"the-floor-install","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/ridiculousredhead.com\/?p=302","title":{"rendered":"The Floor Install"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It is very handy to know people who know how to do things.\u00a0 My Uncle John\u00a0is one of those people.\u00a0 He worked refinishing floors for 20 years or so and luckily was willing to help me get the floors done.\u00a0 Now you may be wondering why I didn&#8217;t just do some research and figure it out on my own as is tradition.\u00a0 Without my uncle I may have thought about it for a whole minute but this is a big job that can easily be screwed up.\u00a0 And I was still having heart palpatations over the money I spent on the wood so I didn&#8217;t want it to all go down the drain.<\/p>\n<p>I must admit the thought of the install had been stressing me out for weeks.\u00a0 I didn&#8217;t know what the hell I was doing and the layout was overwhelming.\u00a0 I wanted it to look random, like an old cottage and wasn&#8217;t sure the best way to do that.\u00a0 Should we lay it all out and have a plan beforehand?\u00a0 Should we wing it and hope we don&#8217;t end up with a mess?\u00a0 I was stressed enough to pick a fight with TB which is a rare thing.\u00a0 Luckily he is\u00a0so frigging cool that even when he was partially (mostly) right later on he didn&#8217;t throw it in my face.<\/p>\n<p>So what we did was go through all the longest boards and divide each into what would fit into which room.\u00a0 There were boards that were too long to fit in the office so we had to use them in the living room to avoid having to cut them.\u00a0\u00a0I mean how could I cut a 10 foot 100 year old board because of poor planning? \u00a0We ended up with three piles: living room, office and stuff under 6 feet. As we\u00a0installed,\u00a0TB and I\u00a0laid out a few rows at a time trying to avoid any\u00a0repeating pattern and my uncle followed and installed.<\/p>\n<p><a onclick=\"javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('\/downloads\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/IMG_0330.jpg');\"  href=\"http:\/\/ridiculousredhead.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/IMG_0330.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" title=\"laying out rows\" src=\"http:\/\/ridiculousredhead.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/IMG_0330-1024x764.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"764\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As a word of advice, when someone sends you to the store for a list of things you don&#8217;t normally use, take a picture with your camera phone.\u00a0 Going through the pictures I have taken to show you I laughed at the sequence of shots of construction adhesive and screws I took to remind myself what I needed.<\/p>\n<p>Having someone who really knows what he&#8217;s doing can take your floor to another level.\u00a0\u00a0You will see\u00a0in the\u00a0below picture, there is a piece of wood with two grooves in it at the door sill.\u00a0 This was once just a 6 inch wide\u00a0board that with table saw magic was transformed into a door saddle.\u00a0 It is slanted to transition to the porch floor and the grooves are for a rubber gasket that will act as weather stripping.\u00a0 It has also been cut to fit perfectly under the old vertical door trim and looks like it has always been there.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a onclick=\"javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('\/downloads\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/IMG_0326.jpg');\"  href=\"http:\/\/ridiculousredhead.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/IMG_0326.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"IMG_0326\" src=\"http:\/\/ridiculousredhead.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/IMG_0326-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>For the transition to the marble door sill in the bathroom, my uncle angled all the ends of the boards so they would fit nice and tight and then lined them up this straight by eye.\u00a0 It was pretty impressive.<\/p>\n<p><a onclick=\"javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('\/downloads\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/IMG_0356.jpg');\"  href=\"http:\/\/ridiculousredhead.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/IMG_0356.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-309\" title=\"IMG_0356\" src=\"http:\/\/ridiculousredhead.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/IMG_0356-224x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"224\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/ridiculousredhead.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/IMG_0356-224x300.jpg 224w, http:\/\/ridiculousredhead.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/IMG_0356-764x1024.jpg 764w, http:\/\/ridiculousredhead.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/IMG_0356.jpg 1936w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 224px) 100vw, 224px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>So as we went along, I tried to learn as much as I could by being\u00a0quiet and watching.\u00a0 I even got to\u00a0put some\u00a0nails in myself.<\/p>\n<p><a onclick=\"javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('\/downloads\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/IMG_0352.jpg');\"  href=\"http:\/\/ridiculousredhead.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/IMG_0352.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-308\" title=\"IMG_0352\" src=\"http:\/\/ridiculousredhead.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/IMG_0352-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" srcset=\"http:\/\/ridiculousredhead.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/IMG_0352-300x224.jpg 300w, http:\/\/ridiculousredhead.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/IMG_0352-1024x764.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>So here is the fully installed floor\u00a0in the living room \/ dining room.<\/p>\n<p><a onclick=\"javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('\/downloads\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/IMG_0369.jpg');\"  href=\"http:\/\/ridiculousredhead.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/IMG_0369.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-310\" title=\"IMG_0369\" src=\"http:\/\/ridiculousredhead.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/IMG_0369-1024x764.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"764\" srcset=\"http:\/\/ridiculousredhead.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/IMG_0369-1024x764.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/ridiculousredhead.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/IMG_0369-300x224.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Tomorrow we are on to the sanding and finishing!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It is very handy to know people who know how to do things.\u00a0 My Uncle John\u00a0is one of those people.\u00a0 He worked refinishing floors for 20 years or so and luckily was willing to help me get the floors done.\u00a0&hellip;
