{"id":362,"date":"2012-01-05T12:49:36","date_gmt":"2012-01-05T17:49:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ridiculousredhead.com\/?p=362"},"modified":"2014-09-03T22:26:34","modified_gmt":"2014-09-04T02:26:34","slug":"produce-bags-you-dont-throw-out","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/ridiculousredhead.com\/?p=362","title":{"rendered":"Produce bags you don&#8217;t throw out"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In our quest to throw less out and use less plastic, I am always on the lookout for reusable ideas.\u00a0 It seems a bit weird to me when I go and buy organic broccoli and then put it in those plastic bags.\u00a0 They are a big waste because what do you do with them afterward?\u00a0 The only thing I have come up with was pick up dog poop and we have biodegradable bags for that.\u00a0 I mean really, do I need to encase dog poop in plastic so it is preserved for future generations?<\/p>\n<p>So I saw this idea on a website awhile back and thought it was awesome.\u00a0 Do you think I saved the link?\u00a0 Nooo.\u00a0 So I have been on the look out and when I find it I will attach since I don&#8217;t want you thinking I am taking credit for someone else&#8217;s brillance.<\/p>\n<p>We start out with flour sack cloth which is light and thin almost like a muslin.\u00a0 You can get this in many forms but for ease on this project I bought them in towel form from Target.\u00a0 The reason is they have already hemed the edges with a pocket we will use later for the draw string, lest our lemons going rolling out onto the floor.<\/p>\n<p>So we start by folding in half with the pocket edges together at both ends.\u00a0 We will then cut down the\u00a0middle\u00a0to produce two\u00a0bags.\u00a0( I also cut some off-center so I would have one big bag and one small one.)<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_363\" style=\"width: 234px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a onclick=\"javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('\/downloads\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/IMG_0275.jpg');\"  href=\"http:\/\/ridiculousredhead.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/IMG_0275.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-363\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-363\" title=\"Produce cut fabric\" src=\"http:\/\/ridiculousredhead.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/IMG_0275-224x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"224\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/ridiculousredhead.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/IMG_0275-224x300.jpg 224w, http:\/\/ridiculousredhead.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/IMG_0275-764x1024.jpg 764w, http:\/\/ridiculousredhead.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/IMG_0275.jpg 1936w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 224px) 100vw, 224px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-363\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The pocket edges are at the top and bottom here<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Next we make sure the fabric is inside out (so when we are finished we will turn right side out and all the edges will be hidden).\u00a0 Line up the edges of the fabric so they are even on all four sides.\u00a0 Flour sack is stretchable so if you are not a straight cutter (me!) you can fudge it.\u00a0 Of your four sides you have: one folded, one with the pocket edges and two that need to be sewn together.<\/p>\n<p>But wait, did I say sew?\u00a0 Deep breaths &#8211; you do not have to get out the machine, if you even have one.\u00a0 The wonder product called Stitch Witchery is our friend here.\u00a0 (*It&#8217;s not a green product but we are saving plastic\u00a0bags so I&#8217;m calling it even).\u00a0 It is a fusable material that comes on a roll like tape.\u00a0 What this means to you is its a glue to sew the seems without the machine, it creates a straight line with your hem so you look good and it&#8217;s not messy so it won&#8217;t get all over.<\/p>\n<p>You will lay it in between the edges of the fabric, cover with a damp tea towel and hold the iron on it for 10-15 seconds.\u00a0 Repeat damp tea towel\u00a0ironing on the other side of the fabric.\u00a0 Done.<\/p>\n<p><a onclick=\"javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('\/downloads\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/IMG_0276.jpg');\"  href=\"http:\/\/ridiculousredhead.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/IMG_0276.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-364\" title=\"produce sw steam\" src=\"http:\/\/ridiculousredhead.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/IMG_0276-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" srcset=\"http:\/\/ridiculousredhead.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/IMG_0276-300x224.jpg 300w, http:\/\/ridiculousredhead.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/IMG_0276-1024x764.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>After you have fused together both of the open sides you can turn it inside out.\u00a0 Make sure you push out the corners from the inside so they are flat and not bunchy.\u00a0 Then iron all the way around so the edges look smooth.<\/p>\n<p>(Part 2 continues on the next post since I can&#8217;t seem to get it all on one post.)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In our quest to throw less out and use less plastic, I am always on the lookout for reusable ideas.\u00a0 It seems a bit weird to me when I go and buy organic broccoli and then put it in those&hellip;
