{"id":441,"date":"2012-01-23T16:09:13","date_gmt":"2012-01-23T21:09:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ridiculousredhead.com\/?p=441"},"modified":"2014-09-03T22:22:46","modified_gmt":"2014-09-04T02:22:46","slug":"yes-virginia-safety-masks-are-important","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/ridiculousredhead.com\/?p=441","title":{"rendered":"Yes Virginia, safety masks are important"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Since I was informed that the post on safety glasses helped save someone&#8217;s eye (Hi Heather!) we will discuss another important safety topic &#8211; safety masks.<\/p>\n<p>I have to admit I have never been a fan of safety masks. \u00a0They are usually made for large men and don&#8217;t fit my face. \u00a0In warm weather they can be very hot and hard to breathe through. \u00a0And let&#8217;s face it, they are not exactly attractive.<\/p>\n<p>Having said all that I highly recommend you use one whenever you are working on something with any kind of dust. \u00a0 The main reason is you have no idea what is in that dust and getting into your lungs. \u00a0Case in point, when I bought my house I set about ripping up the vinyl tile in my kitchen that was coming apart. \u00a0Once I got going I realized that there were another two layers on sticky old tile to rip up. \u00a0I worked on it for two days chipping it apart little by little. \u00a0It wasn&#8217;t until months later that someone mentioned to me that those old tiles could have asbestos in them. \u00a0 Do you think I was wearing a mask? \u00a0Nooooo. \u00a0I was way too cool.<\/p>\n<p>And just because you know there are no hazardous materials in your job it doesn&#8217;t mean you shouldn&#8217;t wear a mask. \u00a0If you have ever used a power sander you will see your clothes and everything within a mile are covered in a layer of sawdust. \u00a0Your face is usually close to the sanding since you need to see what your doing and gets the brunt of it. \u00a0 If you blow your nose sawdust will come out &#8211; gross I know but true. \u00a0 Just think of how much got through your nose and into your lungs.<\/p>\n<p>I bring this all up because last week I did not follow my own advice. \u00a0I was scraping off layers of old paint from a dresser that probably contained some nasty things. \u00a0 By the time I went to bed, my lungs hurt like i had smoked packs of cigarettes. \u00a0 Who knows what I had breathed in. \u00a0By the next day I had the beginnings of a yucky cold. \u00a0I know the dust didn&#8217;t give me a cold but maybe my body was so busy fighting off the dust it didn&#8217;t have time to fight off the cold. \u00a0Either way I felt awful.<\/p>\n<p>So learn from my stupidity and wear a mask. \u00a0Here is a basic one from <a onclick=\"javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('\/outgoing\/www.lowes.com\/pd_209952-98-8511HA1-A_0__?productId=3082295&amp;Ntt=safety+mask&amp;pl=1&amp;currentURL=%2Fpl__0__s%3FNtt%3Dsafety%2Bmask&amp;facetInfo=');\"  href=\"http:\/\/www.lowes.com\/pd_209952-98-8511HA1-A_0__?productId=3082295&amp;Ntt=safety+mask&amp;pl=1&amp;currentURL=%2Fpl__0__s%3FNtt%3Dsafety%2Bmask&amp;facetInfo=\">Lowe&#8217;s<\/a> that I used while sanding last week. \u00a0When I took it off, you can see all the dust that it filtered out that didn&#8217;t go into my lungs. \u00a0 It&#8217;s less than $4. \u00a0 Use one. \u00a0 You really aren&#8217;t too cool.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Since I was informed that the post on safety glasses helped save someone&#8217;s eye (Hi Heather!) we will discuss another important safety topic &#8211; safety masks.
