{"id":494,"date":"2012-02-23T11:09:02","date_gmt":"2012-02-23T16:09:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ridiculousredhead.com\/?p=494"},"modified":"2014-09-03T22:17:43","modified_gmt":"2014-09-04T02:17:43","slug":"newspaper-seed-pots","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/ridiculousredhead.com\/?p=494","title":{"rendered":"Newspaper Seed Pots"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Now that we have chosen our seeds we will need pots to plant them in. \u00a0There are so many different options there is no one right way. You can buy peat pots and pellets but they cost money and it&#8217;s being argued aren&#8217;t eco-friendly. \u00a0(They use peat moss which takes the earth a few million years or so to make and it&#8217;s not easily renewable.) You can invest in a ton of little clay or plastic pots that also cost money and have to be stored somewhere. \u00a0You can save your\u00a0yogurt containers and poke holes for drainage.<\/p>\n<p>I like using newspaper. \u00a0It&#8217;s simple and free if you have already bought the newspaper. \u00a0Here is how I make them.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Step 1: I read the NY Daily News which is a small paper so you may have to adjust for size, maybe cut yours in half first. \u00a0I take one sheet and fold longways<\/p>\n<p><a onclick=\"javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('\/downloads\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/ridiculous-redhead-npc-1.jpg');\"  href=\"http:\/\/ridiculousredhead.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/ridiculous-redhead-npc-1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-501\" title=\"ridiculous redhead npc 1\" src=\"http:\/\/ridiculousredhead.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/ridiculous-redhead-npc-1-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" srcset=\"http:\/\/ridiculousredhead.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/ridiculous-redhead-npc-1-300x224.jpg 300w, http:\/\/ridiculousredhead.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/ridiculous-redhead-npc-1-1024x764.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Step 2: Fold the folded edge down an inch or so. (Yes this is a different piece of paper. about half way down and wrap the paper around it with the small fold inside. \u00a0Some people like to start out with small pots and use small tomato paste cans but I like to start a bit bigger with soup cans. \u00a0I won&#8217;t have to transfer to a bigger pot so soon.<\/p>\n<p><a 1936w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 224px) 100vw, 224px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Step 4: Flip the can up so the open unfolded part is sticking up. \u00a0Now fold over the ends so they all overlap. \u00a0If they don&#8217;t overlap, push the can down a bit to give you more paper to work with. \u00a0This will form the bottom of the pot.<\/p>\n<p><a folds closed with one hand and slide the can out. \u00a0Put a bit of soil inside to keep it from coming apart. \u00a0Then take the inside layer of paper and tuck it under the small fold you made earlier. \u00a0This will keep everything a bit neater at the top. \u00a0I cheated and only tucked part of the paper under the fold which is why it only goes halfway around.<\/p>\n<p><a
