{"id":800,"date":"2012-06-09T10:00:09","date_gmt":"2012-06-09T14:00:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ridiculousredhead.com\/?p=800"},"modified":"2014-09-03T21:55:42","modified_gmt":"2014-09-04T01:55:42","slug":"the-office-trim-in-progress","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/ridiculousredhead.com\/?p=800","title":{"rendered":"The Office Trim in Progress"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>So as I mentioned yesterday I am well into refinishing the wood baseboard trim that was originally installed in my house in the 1930s. \u00a0It has been an adventure from the start. \u00a0This is one of those projects where you know you are opening a can of worms and you have no choice.<\/p>\n<p>Getting the trim off the walls was fun. \u00a0The paint was literally falling off in places.<\/p>\n<p><a onclick=\"javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('\/downloads\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/trim-chipped.jpg');\"  href=\"http:\/\/ridiculousredhead.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/trim-chipped.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-801\" title=\"trim chipped\" src=\"http:\/\/ridiculousredhead.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/trim-chipped-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" srcset=\"http:\/\/ridiculousredhead.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/trim-chipped-300x224.jpg 300w, http:\/\/ridiculousredhead.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/trim-chipped-1024x764.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The trim is made up of a big flat board, a curvy top piece and some quarter round in the front. \u00a0That means for every wall there are three pieces to refinish. \u00a0Here on my work table are six pieces of wood trim which make up exactly two walls. \u00a0The short walls. \u00a0In addition to these are 6 pieces of trim for the longer walls and then nine pieces for the closet.<\/p>\n<p><a onclick=\"javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('\/downloads\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/painted-trim-on-table.jpg');\"  href=\"http:\/\/ridiculousredhead.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/painted-trim-on-table.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-802\" title=\"painted trim on table\" src=\"http:\/\/ridiculousredhead.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/painted-trim-on-table-300x283.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"283\" srcset=\"http:\/\/ridiculousredhead.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/painted-trim-on-table-300x283.jpg 300w, http:\/\/ridiculousredhead.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/painted-trim-on-table-1024x967.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/ridiculousredhead.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/painted-trim-on-table.jpg 1936w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>On the right in the above picture you will see the gallon jug of SoyGel. \u00a0 I can&#8217;t tell you how much I really love this stuff. It a ecofriendly paint stripper made out of soybeans. \u00a0It won&#8217;t eat through the shower curtain and garbage bag I have used as a drop cloth. \u00a0The company has a tutorial where they say you can touch it with your bare hands and use it inside. \u00a0In other words it&#8217;s awesome. \u00a0For simple jobs with one or two coats, it works surprisingly quick for something that doesn&#8217;t burn your fingers off. \u00a0I prefer to put it on and let it soak in. \u00a0If you leave it overnight it dries out just enough that is no longer gooey and the paint comes off in sheets. \u00a0Very soon I will post a tutorial.<\/p>\n<p>Here is a shot after the stripper had been &#8216;cooking&#8217; for awhile. \u00a0 Instead of dissolving the paint it breaks the bond the paint has with the wood. \u00a0It starts to pop off and wrinkle up.<\/p>\n<p><a onclick=\"javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('\/downloads\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/stripper-on-trim-.jpg');\"  href=\"http:\/\/ridiculousredhead.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/stripper-on-trim-.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-803\" title=\"stripper on trim\" src=\"http:\/\/ridiculousredhead.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/stripper-on-trim--224x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"224\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/ridiculousredhead.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/stripper-on-trim--224x300.jpg 224w, http:\/\/ridiculousredhead.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/stripper-on-trim--764x1024.jpg 764w, http:\/\/ridiculousredhead.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/stripper-on-trim-.jpg 1936w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 224px) 100vw, 224px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Usually after I strip something there is very little sanding to do. \u00a0I like this fact. \u00a0As loyal readers know I hate sanding. \u00a0 I thought that since the main board was flat it would be pretty easy to sand things off quickly and get going. \u00a0Hahahahaha<\/p>\n<p>This is old growth wood which is so much harder than anything you can buy today. \u00a0Mine is pine so I thought it wouldn&#8217;t be very tough. \u00a0It was. \u00a0I have been sanding forever. \u00a0The wood laughed at my 80 grit sandpaper. \u00a0It has this lovely texture where the face of the wood isn&#8217;t totally flat. \u00a0In the pic below, the bottom darker boards are stripped of painted but not sanded. \u00a0The old stain and years of wear are still there. \u00a0The top board has been sanded for what seemed like 3 days in the sun. \u00a0(I am totally going to have a farmers tan for the wedding.) \u00a0The grain is so cool and kind of looks like the clouds on Jupiter.<\/p>\n<p><a onclick=\"javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('\/downloads\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/sanding-b-and-a.jpg');\"  href=\"http:\/\/ridiculousredhead.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/sanding-b-and-a.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-804\" title=\"sanding b and a\" src=\"http:\/\/ridiculousredhead.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/sanding-b-and-a-224x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"224\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/ridiculousredhead.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/sanding-b-and-a-224x300.jpg 224w, http:\/\/ridiculousredhead.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/sanding-b-and-a-764x1024.jpg 764w, http:\/\/ridiculousredhead.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/sanding-b-and-a.jpg 1936w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 224px) 100vw, 224px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>So far I have all the pieces stripped of paint. \u00a0As of yesterday all 6 short wall pieces are sanded. \u00a0Using a orbital sander on curved molding just well, sucks but it is better than hand sanding. It didn&#8217;t help that every hour it would start raining for four minutes. \u00a0Literally.
