{"id":840,"date":"2012-06-21T10:00:04","date_gmt":"2012-06-21T14:00:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ridiculousredhead.com\/?p=840"},"modified":"2014-09-03T21:50:33","modified_gmt":"2014-09-04T01:50:33","slug":"mid-june-garden-update","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/ridiculousredhead.com\/?p=840","title":{"rendered":"Mid June Garden Update"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The weather around here has been crazy. \u00a0It rains for a week straight then its sunny but in the 50s. \u00a0I went from a fleece at night three days ago to the middle of a 100 degree heat wave today. \u00a0While this is irritating to me, the plants seem very happy.<\/p>\n<p>While TB has been doing a nice job with the lawn, I have been working on the gardens. \u00a0Here is a shot of our side yard where the main veggie and flower gardens are. It apparently also helps make the leaves huge. \u00a0(That&#8217;s a tongue depressor used as a marker in the background for scale.) TB just picks a leaf and walks around the garden eating it. He can&#8217;t wait for the tomatoes for the basil\/tomato\/mozzarella combo he eats all summer.<\/p>\n<p><a onclick=\"javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('\/downloads\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/big-basil.jpg');\"  href=\"http:\/\/ridiculousredhead.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/big-basil.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-843\" title=\"big basil\" src=\"http:\/\/ridiculousredhead.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/big-basil-1024x765.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"670\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"http:\/\/ridiculousredhead.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/big-basil-1024x765.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/ridiculousredhead.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/big-basil-300x224.jpg 300w, http:\/\/ridiculousredhead.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/big-basil.jpg 1728w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 670px) 100vw, 670px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Even the peppers have started to get tiny flowers! \u00a0These are bell peppers. \u00a0I planted two plants from a carnival mixed color seed pack. \u00a0We won&#8217;t know what color they are until they are ripe. \u00a0I secretly hope both are purple!<\/p>\n<p><a onclick=\"javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('\/downloads\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/tiny-peppers-6-20.jpg');\"  href=\"http:\/\/ridiculousredhead.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/tiny-peppers-6-20.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-844\" title=\"tiny peppers 6 20\" src=\"http:\/\/ridiculousredhead.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/tiny-peppers-6-20-1024x718.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"670\" height=\"469\" srcset=\"http:\/\/ridiculousredhead.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/tiny-peppers-6-20-1024x718.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/ridiculousredhead.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/tiny-peppers-6-20-300x210.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 670px) 100vw, 670px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I may be the most excited about the strawberries. \u00a0These plants have a long payoff time. \u00a0For the first year you are supposed to pick off any fruit that pop up and cut off all but one or two runners. \u00a0Then in year 2 you can actually eat the fruit That meant I planted these strawberries last year and can only now get excited. \u00a0 I ate one the other day and it was so awesome. \u00a0Worth the wait! \u00a0Now there are tons popping up.<\/p>\n<p><a onclick=\"javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('\/downloads\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/strawberries-6-20.jpg');\"  href=\"http:\/\/ridiculousredhead.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/strawberries-6-20.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-845\" title=\"strawberries 6 20\" src=\"http:\/\/ridiculousredhead.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/strawberries-6-20-1024x764.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"670\" height=\"499\" srcset=\"http:\/\/ridiculousredhead.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/strawberries-6-20-1024x764.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/ridiculousredhead.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/strawberries-6-20-300x224.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 670px) 100vw, 670px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Next we move over to the left garden. \u00a0This is where we installed the cucumber frame (tutorial <a href=\"http:\/\/ridiculousredhead.com\/?p=717\">here<\/a>) not so long ago. \u00a0Now we have a ton of crazy vines trying to grow everywhere. \u00a0This will be my problem wild child that needs a lot of attention. \u00a0I have been training it to grow up the frame\/trellis using the same cloth strips I used to stake the peppers (tutorial <a href=\"http:\/\/ridiculousredhead.com\/?p=810\">here<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><a onclick=\"javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('\/downloads\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/left-garden-6-20.jpg');\"  href=\"http:\/\/ridiculousredhead.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/left-garden-6-20.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-846\" title=\"left garden 6 20\" src=\"http:\/\/ridiculousredhead.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/left-garden-6-20-1024x775.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"670\" height=\"507\" srcset=\"http:\/\/ridiculousredhead.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/left-garden-6-20-1024x775.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/ridiculousredhead.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/left-garden-6-20-300x227.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 670px) 100vw, 670px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In the front left side of this garden are the beets. \u00a0Since it&#8217;s been cool lately they are still going strong. \u00a0I am leaving them until they really complain. \u00a0Last fall when I pulled them there was nothing but leaves but I can see little beets poking out of the soil. \u00a0Don&#8217;t knock em until you try them. Roast them with olive oil, then add a splash of vinegar and chill. \u00a0Add some crumbled goat cheese and you are in.<\/p>\n<p><a onclick=\"javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('\/downloads\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/beets-6-20.jpg');\"  href=\"http:\/\/ridiculousredhead.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/beets-6-20.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-847\" title=\"beets 6 20\" src=\"http:\/\/ridiculousredhead.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/beets-6-20-1024x764.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"670\" height=\"499\" srcset=\"http:\/\/ridiculousredhead.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/beets-6-20-1024x764.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/ridiculousredhead.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/beets-6-20-300x224.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 670px) 100vw, 670px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And finally, our last stop on today&#8217;s tour , on the back left of the garden &#8211; pumpkin. \u00a0When we dumped last years compost in to the gardens all the stuff hadn&#8217;t cooked all the way. \u00a0Namely the pumpkin seeds from last year&#8217;s jack-o-lantern. \u00a0Up sprang about 10-12 seedlings. \u00a0I thought this would be fun and begged TB to keep one. \u00a0He laughed at me, said I had no idea how big they would get and told me to try it out. \u00a0It is June. \u00a0I am guessing they would be ready for harvest around October. \u00a0That&#8217;s four months from now.<\/p>\n<p>This is what one leaf looks like. \u00a0I put my hand in the shot so you could understand how freaking big one leaf is. \u00a0 This is not the biggest leaf. \u00a0It has already almost out grown the spot it is in. \u00a0It is only June. \u00a0I am guessing this will be yanked out shortly.
