Ode to a Coffee Maker

This morning I woke up and went into the kitchen just as I have done every morning.  I walked over to my second favorite appliance in search of my morning sanity – my coffee maker.   (In case you were wondering, the #1 appliance is the Kitchen Aid mixer.  No matter how much I love coffee that thing wins.)

When I pushed the on button this is what I saw  –

Yes that says “ERR2” which I can only guess means “Error 2”.  This isn’t like a Chevy where you take it to the mechanic, he hooks it up to the computer and it tells you what’s wrong with it.  I have no idea what Error 2 is.  I have no idea what Error 1 is either for that matter.

This all started last night.  After a long day of painting and sanding in 90 degree heat, I wanted a cup of coffee.  I figured it might help me stay coherent and actually be able to hold a conversation with TB over dinner.  I knew that my long time coffee friend was a having a hard time as of late.  There were the accidents where we ended up with coffee all over the counter.  There was a time or two where I noticed some grinds in the pot.  I tried not to say anything as not to make the pot feel bad.

I knew that sometime soon we were going to need a new coffee pot.  I had gotten this one the first week after I bought this house. I closed 10 days before I was hosting 10 people for Christmas dinner and needed a coffee pot for dessert.  I didn’t own one at the time since I would wait until I got to NYC for work and buy coffee there.  Since it was less than a week before Christmas, most of the coffee pots were sold out and this one was one of 3 or 4 left. I brought it home and it worked great and we were all happy.

That was 4 and a half years ago now. It probably lasted so long since it didn’t get used much for most of that time.  Since I start the design business and began working from home it has been a different story.  It began to show wear.  The gold filter was no longer gold.  The white plastic was no longer white.  And then last night I went to make that pot of coffee and I got an error.  I turned it off and tried again.  I unplugged it and tried again.  Frankly, I was in denial.

This morning I pretended like the fight we had last night didn’t happen (the same way most couples do) and went in to make coffee.  It was not to be.  As the above picture shows all too clearly, I had to face facts.  It was dead.

After making a stop at 7-11 for a cup of coffee to make sure I was functional enough to shop, I headed to Target.  There I bought myself something off my wedding registry.  I was hoping the old machine would last until the bridal shower but it didn’t work that way.  Once in the store I saw that it was $10 less online.  I bought it anyway figuring I would spend that much at 7-11 until the new one was shipped.

May I introduce my new coffee maker.

It brews into a carafe OR into a mug.  It does a one cup thing like the K cup things without the plastic cup waste.  This means that I will either drink less coffee or way more.  If I started posting things here at 3 AM you will know which one.
